    My Story



    I had just finished an amazing, year-long hospital chaplain residency and was getting ready to start a new job. But I panicked. After a year-long, rotating shift schedule, my body didn’t know when to wake up and when to sleep. That would have been challenging but probably manageable health-wise...except that same year, I came out to my family and spiritual leaders, and went through a profound grieving process. Simply put: I was an exhausted, semi-functional mess. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to perform well at my new job. The even bigger problem? This was just another cycle of burnout of many I’d experienced over more than 10 years.

     

    I kept looking for the root of the problem, because by now I had a cluster of associated health issues: hormones out of whack, low energy, sugar cravings, brain fog, food intolerances, and an unhappy gut. I tried several different diets. They worked and I got my energy back for a short time, only to return to poor eating habits. I got into healthy routines at the gym and walking with friends, only to lose those routines when I moved to a new place or went through a stressful time.

     

    I learned that - unfortunately - fatigue and mediocre health are far too common. It wasn’t just me. And I learned that I could recover my energy, but that sustaining it for the long term took a different, new set of habits and skills. I learned they’re much smaller and easier than I expected, but they make a huge difference in the long run.

     

    Now I know what drains my energy. With that knowledge, I can manage those things where necessary and change them when possible. And, my energy has become a renewable resource! I have fun, handy tools ready whenever I need a boost.
